Hi Mark, Thanks for this. I have to say that I don't find this an acceptable solution - I think there is simply no place for musical instruments on a residential square. Also, will the playground be cordoned off while they are investigating it? Last night I woke up again of people jumping up and down on it.

Guys, Cory (at Hackney Council) would like to have the acoustician take readings inside some of the flats close to the issue. If you would be willing to give someone access with meters, please drop me a line at dalstonsquarera@gmail.com stating your name, address, contact telephone number, and normal times of availability (I have no idea if they work outside of office hours) and I will pass the details on. Alternatively, contact Cory direct at Cory.Defoe@hackney.gov.uk. Access could be needed as soon as mid-week.

Heehee: Saw your email to Cory jvl and that was exactly what I was going to suggest. Anyone else who is unhappy with the proposed solution is certainly free to contact him directly also of course.
As it stands right now, Cory has received a lot more emails from parents asking when the council were going to stop tormenting children and finally remove the fencing to open the playground, than emails complaining about the noise (although how many of those parents would have thought twice had they known about the noise that was coming, no-one knows). The current solution is simply a comprise based on the opinion he has heard so far. Opinion can be changed. ;o)

You're detective skills are unrivaled, Mark! Well, as I explained to Cory, I find that midnight noise pollution is more important (and I am saying that as a parent). But it could just be me - in that case I'll continue to sleep with the windows closed and buy some state-of-the-art earplugs.

We are on the 8th floor of Thomas Tower and the noise is insufferable. Even with the doors closed, the noise still finds its way through.
I too think the proposed solution is unacceptable. This is a nuisance and is unlawful in any event. This sort of noise shouldn't occur even during the day - why should residents' have to suffer the noise in the daytime or at weekends? It is not just an issue for the evening. I would suggest this needs to be cordoned off while the musical instruments are removed.

I live in Thomas tower and the Musical Playground is incredibly annoying! I've been trying to work from home over the weekend and I find it very disruptive. Its even more annoying when it happens at 2am. I'm astonished that anyone thought this would be a good thing to install in the square. Please, lets get this removed as soon as possible... and have it installed outside the window of the person that created it. I'll happily go to theirs and express myself musically at all hours for their listening pleasure.

I would like to ad that I'm not happy with the suggestion of making the instruments useable only during the day. The noise is unacceptable at anytime of the day.

I also fail to see how this could be regarded a compromise.I would indeed be very grateful if the DSRA would support those affected by the noise and ask for the area to be cordoned off until a solution has been found.

Thank you Mark for the swift response.
Whilst I appreciate Cory's quick action in investigating this, if he is truly comparing the response by how many emails he has received by parents on accessing the playground vs. how many residents have complained about the noise, this argument is a bit ludicrous. The playground just opened a few days ago and already people are upset. I don't think many parents would have guessed that the playground was a musical one, they just wanted to rightfully let their children play on equipment that looked interesting and different and has roped off in mystery for months. Had the council actually bothered to ask neighbouring residents if they wanted a loud, musical playground or a just a normal one with monkey bars/slides etc, I'm pretty certain most would have voted for the latter and the kids would not have cared either way.
Small talk in the Sledge Tower lift this morning was on how annoying the noise was and this was from my neighbours on the 12th, 9th and 3rd floors. I agree with those who say we should not have to put up with this in the daytime either. If summer temperatures this year are anything like last year, this building will be roasting and windows will have to stay open. We should not have to close our windows and stay off our balconies because of poor planning. If Cory needs more emails to counterbalance the ones he's received so far then perhaps we should all write and rally our neighbours to do the same.

Another issue is that the nursery Zeeba, located on the square, also plays a role in this saga. I am not sure what Cory has told the DSRA delegation about this, but the manager of Zeeba told me that they invested in the playground because they don't have an outside space. So it could very well be that what Cory fears is not so much the raging parents but rather a breach of contract with Zeeba.

Hi all, we are new residents to the Square and I am pleased to have found this forum. When the play area was re-opened we were really surprised that it included equipment that make loud chime and wind instrument noises. It is great that the Square has a play area and I can imagine how much fun those things are but having been kept awake by late night activities and then woken up by little ones having a go, they are not suitable for a residential area. Especially as the noise echoes around the Square. Without a fence to keep activities to social hours I do think something has to be done.

I am a resident of Gaumont Tower (5th floor facing the square) and the noise is ridiculous. All Saturday and Sunday i could hear it in every room in my flat and both nights, in the early morning, i was woken up by drunk hipsters jumping up and down on them. It's great there's a playground for all the kids but why in the name of all that's holy did anyone think musical panflutes were a good idea in the middle of a residential square. THEY.HAVE.TO.GO.

Ah thanks for the heads up on Zeeba, jvl. There seems to be a few factors in the mix here. I've just arrived home and the bell torture continues...
I have filed a noise pollution report as well.
